You object that the interactivity of video games complicates their status as art. Artists express themselves through their works and thereby realize their creative visions. A video game allows its player to determine how the experience of the game finally manifests itself; therefore, what the player experiences is not the vision of the game’s creator but rather the vision of the player.
“Obviously, video games are affected by the people who play them,” Ron says. “But I don’t see why that would disqualify them as art. I mean, theatergoers affect the plays they watch; the actors respond to the audience’s reactions. That doesn’t make theatre a less effective medium.”
